Invited Workshop Speaker Kathrin Mahler-Walther | Unconscious Bias
Managing Director Europäische Akademie für Frauen in Politik und Wirtschaft Berlin (EAF), Berlin
During the first annual retreat of the CRC, members took part in a short workshop on Unconscious Bias.
Kathrin Mahler-Walther’s lecture was followed by short discussion sessions on the topic. Several members voiced the need for further discussion and more concrete measures to cope with this issue. To foster discussion and sharing on the topic, Speaker Matthew Larkum opened a channel on Gender in the SFB’s slack platform. Sharing on slack is still ongoing.
“Unconscious bias is human – but it also leads to the fact that we automatically find people who are similar to us sympathetic, that we are suspicious of outsiders and that we take mental shortcuts by automatically adding missing information about others. In order to attract the best talents and potentials for organisations, it is important to reflect on how decisions are made: Who do we hire? Who do we promote? Who do we recognise as talent?” (translated from German, source EAF poster).
